Windows 95/98 Setup
(Dial Up Networking)

Please note: If you are using a network consult your Network Administrator BEFORE you go through any of this setup. Also if you have a different version your setup may vary slightly. This should not affect your connection.
 

SETUP YOUR MODEM

Your modem allows you to dial into Online Colorado and connect to the Internet. You’ll be using your modem each time you connect to the Internet. Make sure the modem is connected to your computer and is switched on (if external). Windows 95/98 may have already been configured for your modem. If so, you can skip the following section.

  1. Click on Start, Select Settings and then Control Panel.

  3. Double click on Modems.

  5. If this is the first time you have installed a modem, the Install New Modem wizard will automatically run. Otherwise, double click on the Add button.

  6. Note: A wizard is a program that helps you through difficult or complex tasks by presenting a series of simple questions.
     

  7. Click on Next. Windows will check for a modem on all COM ports and attempt to identify your modem. This process will take a few seconds to complete.

  9. If the modem shown is not your modem then click on Change, choose your modem manufacturer from the Manufacturers list and the model from the Models list and then click on OK. If your modem is not listed select a standard modem type.

  11. Depending on whether you have given your location information to Windows 95/98 before, the Location Information window may appear. Follow the on-screen instructions and then click on Next.
  12. Click on Next and then click on Finish. Click on OK.


INSTALL DIAL-UP NETWORKING

Dial-Up Networking allows you to use your modem to make a network connection to the Internet.

Note: You may have already installed "Dial-Up Networking" when you first installed Windows. On most new versions of Windows, Dial-Up Networking is already pre-installed. Please follow these steps to ensure that the necessary components are installed.

  1. Click on Start, Select Settings and then Control Panel and double click on the Add/Remove Programs icon.

  3. Select the Windows Setup property tab.

  4.  
  5. Select Communications from the Components list and then click on Details.

  6.  
  7. Ensure Dial-Up Networking and HyperTerminal boxes are checked. Follow any instructions that may appear when you check or uncheck boxes. Click on OK.

  8. Note:The following steps are only required if you added components you have not previously installed. Otherwise, Dial-Up Networking is installed and you can proceed to the next section.
     

  9. Insert your Windows 95/98 Setup disk(s) as prompted. This process will take some time.

  11. Windows may ask you for a computer and workgroup name. Type in names as you feel appropriate. For example, for Computer name enter Home Computer and for Workgroup enter Home. Click on Close.

  13. Remove any disk(s) from your disk drives. Reboot your computer by clicking on Start and then Shut Down, select Restart and then click on Yes.

  15. Now that Dial-Up Networking is installed, you will be asked for a user name and password. Enter a user name and password if you desire, or leave them blank if you do not wish the logon window to appear again.


INSTALL NETWORKING

TCP/IP is the networking protocol used by the Internet. Using TCP/IP and Dial-Up Networking, your computer can access all Internet resources. If you are connected to a local area network, do not proceed further without speaking to your LAN administrator. Most home users are not connected to a LAN.

  1. Click on Start, Select Settings and then Control Panel and double click on Network.

  3. If either TCP/IP or TCP/IP -> Dial-Up Adapter is in the network components list (use the scrollbar if necessary) then jump to part 5. Otherwise, click on Add.

  5. Select Protocol and then click on the Add button.

  7. Select Microsoft in the Manufacturers list and TCP/IP in the Network Protocols list. Click on OK.

  9. Select Dial Up Adapter and then click on the Properties button.

  11. Select the Bindings property tab and ensure that either TCP/IP or TCP/IP -> Dial-Up Adapter is checked. Click on OK.

  13. Click on OK and insert Windows 95/98 Setup disks as required. If Windows asks if you want to restart then click on the Yes button.


CONFIGURE TCP/IP

TCP/IP Networking needs to be configured so that it knows to use your modem to connect to the Internet.
 

  1. Click on Start, select Settings and then Control Panel and double click on Network.

  3. See if TCP/IP -> Dial-Up Adapter is in the list of Network Components (use the scrollbar if necessary). If it is, click on it. Otherwise, see if TCP/IP is in the list of Network Components (use the scrollbar if necessary). If it is, click on it. Click on the Properties button.

  5. On the IP Address property tab, select Obtain an IP address automatically.

  7. On the WINS Configuration property tab, select Disable WINS Resolution.

  9. On the Gateway property tab, Installed gateways should be empty. If this is not the case then select one of the gateways from the Installed Gateways list and click on the Remove button. Repeat this process until the list is empty.

  11. On the Bindings property tab, if File and printer sharing is present, ensure it is not selected .

  12. Note:It is recommended that you keep this box unchecked as unauthorised access can be obtained to your computer through network connections.
     

  13. On the DNS Configuration property tab, select Disable DNS.

  15. Click on OK to close the TCP/IP Properties window.

  17. Click on OK. If Window asks if you want to restart click on the Yes button.


SETUP YOUR CONNECTION TO ONLINE COLORADO

In this section, we create a Dial-Up Networking profile with which you can use to connect to Online Colorado. Online Colorado is your direct gateway to the Internet. Your profile includes the phone number your modem should dial to connect to your nearest Online Colorado point of presence.

  1. On your desktop, double click on the My Computer icon and then double click on Dial-Up Networking.

  3. If this is the first time you have used Dial-Up Networking, a wizard will automatically appear to help you configure a new connection. Otherwise, double click on Make New Connection.

  5. In the name field, type Online Colorado.

  6.  
  7. From the Select a modem drop down list select the modem you installed in SECTION 1. Click on Next.

  9. Fill in the area code and phone number of the Online Colorado point of presence to which you want to connect. The Grand Junction phone numbers are 241-8646 for 33.6 or slower modems and 245-4459 for 57.6 or faster modems.

  11. Country code should already show the USA. Click on Next.

  13. Click on Finish.


CONFIGURE YOUR CONNECTION

Now we have to configure your Online Colorado Dial-Up Networking profile for the Online Colorado network.

  1. Right click on the Online Colorado icon in the Dial-Up Networking window and select Properties.

  2.  
  3. If the phone number for Online Colorado is in the same area code as you, uncheck Use country code and area code.

  4.  
  5. Click on the Configure button. Make sure that the maximum speed is set to no more than 57600 then click OK.

  7. Click on the Server Types button. In the Server Type window make sure that Type of Dial-Up Server is set to PPP: Windows... and that Enable Software Compression and TCP/IP are the only boxes checked.

  9. Click on the TCP/IP Settings button. In the TCP/IP Settings window make sure Server assigned IP address is selected.

  10. Make sure Server Assigned name server address is selected.

    Make sure that Use IP header compression and Use default gateway on remote network are checked.
    Click on OK to close the TCP/IP Settings window.
     

  11. Click on OK to close the Server Types window. Click on OK to close the Online Colorado window.


CONNECT TO ONLINE COLORADO AND THE INTERNET

This final section will guide you through connecting to your nearest Online Colorado point of presence, logging in and then switching into PPP mode. A PPP connection allows TCP/IP networking to operate across your modem. Once connected, you have full access to Online Colorado and the Internet!
This section also serves as your guide for the next time you want to connect to Online Colorado and the Internet.
 

  1. Double click on My Computer and then on Dial-Up Networking. Double click on the Online Colorado icon. 

  2. Enter your Online Colorado username (eg. jsmith). Enter your password in the password box.

  3.  
  4. Click on Connect (for external modems, make sure your modem is turned on before you click on Connect).

  5.  
  6. Wait for the connect status window to indicate that your connection is successful.

  7.  
  8. You may now run Netscape, Microsoft Internet Explorer and any other winsock-compliant Internet software. To disconnect at any time, bring up the Connection to Online Colorado window and click on the Disconnect button.

  9. Hint: Use the taskbar to locate the Connection to Online Colorado window.
